Tummy Tucks or Body Contouring - Panniculectomy vs Abdominoplasty
As more and more people are having weight loss sugery such as, gastric bypass and lap band, insurance companies are now beginning to mandate the difference between a panniculectomy and abdominoplasty. Abdominoplasty and panniculectomy are two different "tummy tuck" procedures.

Panniculectomy
After massive weight loss, there can be a large "apron" (abdominal panniculus) of excess fat and skin that hangs down from the lower abdomen. At times, this apron is so large that it covers the hips and extends around to the lower back. Panniculectomy is a surgical procedure in which this apron is removed. With documentation of problems associated with the hanging skin, this can be submitted to and possibly covered by your health insurance carrier.
Panniculectomy deals only with excess skin and fat. A panniculectomy can either be performed alone or in conjunction with an abdominoplasty, depending on the patient's physical symptoms. A panniculectomy is a reconstructive procedure, where an abdominoplasty is more of a cosmetic procedure.

Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty deals with muscle as well as skin and fat. The abdominoplasty deals with the abdominal area and is what is commonly known as the Tummy tuck. This procedure deals with the transposition of the belly button and tightens the fascia muscles of the tummy. The tummy has a flat, tight and smooth appearance after this procedure.
An Abdominoplasty is rarely covered by insurance where a functional surgery such as a Panniculectomy is more likely to be covered as a medical necessity. |
